Paddle Board Maintenance - How To Look After Your SUP In 2025

Written by Lydia Burdett /

While year round paddleboarding is increasingly popular, it’s the anticipation of longer days and warmer waters that really signal the start of 2025 SUP season. If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to start thinking about preparing your board by cleaning all of its components and making sure they are working correctly. Even with our advancements in materials and SUP construction, inflatable paddle boards still require care to combat wear and tear, whether from winter expeditions or months of storage over the colder months.

At Red, we’ve been offering an extended 5-year warranty on all of our market-leading inflatable paddle boards since 2022. However, consistent paddle board maintenance is key to maintaining longevity. We’re still seeing boards from early 2010s models in use today, proving that proper care extends your SUP’s lifespan significantly. A thorough pre-season clean sets you up for success, but it’s the routine post-paddle maintenance that really makes a difference. Here’s how to look after your SUP in 2025:

Correct Paddle Board Storage

The portability of inflatable paddle boards remains a major draw, with our innovations in materials, like lighter, more durable materials and enhanced drop-stitch construction making boards even more compact. They pack down neatly, fitting seamlessly into a storage bag that can be tucked away in a garage, shed, wardrobe or even a car boot!

Proper storage is crucial for maintaining the life of your board and this process starts long before you actually zip up your paddle board bag. After each use, remember to remove all attachments, including the fins and leash if appropriate. Completely dry and deflate your board before you pack it away; this prevents mould, mildew, and unnecessary wear.

Roll It Up The Right Way

To get your inflatable paddle board into its bag, you’ll need to roll it up. When it comes to this, many paddlers assume that tighter is better. In reality, the emphasis should be on minimising creases and stress on the board’s surface. This is not to say that a snug fit isn’t desirable, but avoiding overly tight rolls which could alter the fabric’s integrity is key. You should also ensure that the roll is even to avoid pressure points on the board.

Rinse, Rinse, Rinse

Whether you paddle in freshwater or saltwater, your inflatable paddle board will inevitably collect residue spanning sand, salt, algae or other debris. Giving your SUP a quick rinse after every use is therefore a critical paddle board maintenance task which prevents buildup that can affect its performance and lifespan. Pay extra attention to the fins, seams, and valves, as these areas tend to trap dirt.

Thorough Cleaning

Day-to-day rinses will keep your board in good shape but occasional deep cleaning is a valuable habit to build, especially if you notice stains or your SUP will be sitting unused for some time. Use a mild soap and fresh water with a soft brush or cloth for gentle scrubbing, then rinse thoroughly to remove any residue. It’s also important to avoid using any harsh chemicals to clean your paddle board as these can degrade the surface over time.

Be Mindful When Leaving Your Board Inflated

The final thing to consider as part of your paddle board maintenance is whether you leave it inflated or not. If you paddle frequently, you may prefer to leave your board inflated for convenience. While this is fine for short periods, keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent heat-related damage.

Over time, your board will naturally lose so air pressure if left inflated. Before heading out to your chosen SUP spot, always check and top it up to ensure optimal performance out on the water.

With these simple steps, your SUP will stay in excellent shape for all of your 2025 paddleboarding adventures and beyond. Consistent care ensures your board lasts as long as it should and that you can enjoy this SUP season, as well as future ones.
